Frequently Asked Questions
This is a frequently asked question, yet the hardest to answer. Do your shirts have two sides? Are some graphics large and others small, or are they all the same size? Do you have a specific size you want your quilt to be when finished? Is there a particular style quilt that you like? All of these questions can impact the number of shirts that can be included in a quilt. I typically ask you to bring all the shirts you want in your quilt to our consultation, and we will work together to figure out the style and size of your finished quilt.
I have made quilts with as few as nine shirts and as many as 60. The average quilt has 20-30 shirts and is between a full and queen in size.
If you have over 30 shirts we recommend having a stack of shirts that “must be included” and a stack of “if we have room”. This step is helpful but not necessary. I can always use all of your shirts but the size and style options could be more limited.
You name it, we can include it! We can use t-shirts, sweatshirts, dry-fit, jerseys, ties, jeans, dress shirts, dress pants, and even wedding dresses! The only fabric that we have found to be tricky to quilt with are chunky sweaters. We have included them in the past but find they don’t quilt to our standards. If you include a delicate fabric that needs to be dry cleaned then your entire quilt will need to be dry cleaned. Otherwise, our quilts are machine washable. If you have any questions about a specific clothing item give us a call or shoot us an email!
Step 1: Wash and dry your shirts. Please do not use dryer sheets when drying your shirts. The stabilizer we use during the creation of your quilt does not adhere well to the film a dryer sheet leaves behind.
Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the fronts, backs, pockets, and sleeves of your shirts. During our consultation we will go through all your items to make sure we include only what is important or meaningful to you!
Please DO NOT pre-cut your shirts. I will do this in the design process to make sure they are cut to the exact size, allowing for seam allowances, etc.
I will design the layout of your quilt after our consultation. Most of the time the layout will be based on the color of your shirts. However, if you have a specific location you would like a shirt to be let us know during our consultation and we will make it happen! If you know you would like even blocks (where all shirts are exactly the same size) and would like to select the layout we recommend laying out all your shirts prior to our consultation and taking a picture of the layout. At our consultation I will have you text, or email me the picture for my reference.
I can put a few shirts on the back of your quilt, but I can not do two full sides of t-shirts. The reason I can not create a two sided quilt is due to how the backing fabric is loaded onto the longarm quilt machine. If you see a two sided quilt it is more than likely more of a blanket and not a true quilt.
Yes. I can put an embroidery label on the back of your quilt or make a custom block on the front of your quilt. See the “Quilt Extras” tab to see some of what we have done.
Absolutely! We recommend washing your quilt on cold with a mild detergent. We also would suggest using a color catcher to prevent any fading or bleeding of colors. Tumble dry on a low heat setting until about 90% dry and air dry the last 10%. The only exception to this rule is if one or more of the items in your quilt require dry cleaning, then the entire quilt needs to be dry cleaned.
Yes, there is a difference between a quilt and a blanket. We make genuine quilts.
A quilt consists of three layers. The top, this is the pieced part of your quilt that contains all your memories. The middle, batting, that will keep you warm. The back, most often this is a solid, tone on tone, or print cotton fabric that coordinates with the top of your quilt. All three layers are then stitched together with a decorative stitch. Part of what makes a true quilt hold its shape and last a lifetime is the close spacing of the quilting stitches.
A blanket is thinner than a quilt and usually made from just two layers. It may be tacked periodically throughout or just stitched around the edge. It is flimsy and will not stand up to use over time.
If you see a quilt advertised for a cheap price, please be aware that you may actually be getting a blanket and not a quilt. These are a lifetime of memories and are worth spending a little more to have a product that will truly last forever.
The first step to order a quilt would be to give me a call, text, or shoot me an email. We will then set up a time to meet at a food court or Bread Co. in the greater St. Louis/St. Charles area that is convenient for both of us. During our consultation please bring all your shirts and/or clothing items with you. We will discuss quilt style, size, colors of fabric to be used on the back and borders, and turn around time. I will be able to give you a total price for the completion of your quilt. Please see the “pricing” page for estimated costs. I also ask for half down at this time. We accept cash, check, paypal and credit cards with an additional fee.
Contact for availability. I would recommend contacting me as soon as you know you are wanting a quilt to assure we can meet your deadline and reserve a spot.
We use quality quilting cotton fabrics purchsed at a local quilt shop.
